The highly-anticipated release of DLC 3 for Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero has arrived, but for many fans, the five-month wait has culminated not in excitement, but in a wave of profound disappointment. The latest character pack, “Dragon Ball DAIMA: Character Pack 2,” adds a handful of new fighters to the roster, including characters from the upcoming Dragon Ball DAIMA series. However, the content drop has been met with a lukewarm to outright negative reception from a community that has been patiently, and at times desperately, waiting for significant new additions to the game’s core experience.

The core of the issue stems from a combination of factors, primarily the long delay between content drops and the perceived lack of substance in this particular DLC. After a robust launch, which included two character packs in quick succession, the development team at Spike Chunsoft has been radio silent for months. This silence, coupled with the high price point of the game’s Season Pass, has created a sense of growing frustration among players who felt the game, while boasting an impressive character count, was lacking in fundamental content such as new stages, game modes, and a more robust single-player experience. The DLC was viewed as a “do-or-die” moment for the game’s post-launch support, and for many, it simply did not deliver.

The Controversial Roster and The DAIMA Dilemma

The “Dragon Ball DAIMA: Character Pack 2” adds six new characters: Goku (Mini), Super Saiyan 4 Goku (DAIMA), Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta (DAIMA), Majin Duu, Third Eye Gomah, and Giant Gomah. While the inclusion of characters from the upcoming anime series is a marketing no-brainer, it has been a point of contention for many. The community had been hoping for more fan-favorite characters from other sagas to fill the roster’s notable gaps. For a game that positions itself as the ultimate “Dragon Ball” experience, the absence of key characters from the original “Dragon Ball” series and classic movies is a constant source of frustration. The fact that two of the most sought-after characters, Super Saiyan 4 Goku and Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta, are now variants of the “mini” characters from the new series, has also rubbed many fans the wrong way. They were expecting these forms as new transformations or additions to the existing roster, not as separate, smaller characters. This feels like a missed opportunity to truly expand the game in a meaningful way.

The feeling of being short-changed is further amplified by the disparity in character counts between this DLC and the previous ones. The first two packs added a combined total of over a dozen characters, including popular additions from Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. In stark contrast, DLC 3 provides a smaller, more niche selection after a much longer development cycle. While a free update adds a new “First Demon World” stage and some much-needed balance adjustments, it isn’t enough to satisfy a player base craving more substantial content.

The Cost of Silence: Community Trust and Game Longevity

The primary issue, however, goes beyond the DLC’s content itself. It’s about a lack of communication and perceived support from Bandai Namco and Spike Chunsoft. For five months, the community was left in the dark with little to no news on the game’s future. The silence, in an era of active live-service games, has led to speculation that the game has been abandoned in favor of other projects. The fact that the DLC was announced with a trailer just days before its release, with no prior teasers or roadmap updates, only reinforced the feeling that the developers were quietly working on the game without any real desire to engage with the community. This approach is in stark contrast to the development of other highly-successful fighting games, where a constant flow of communication and a transparent roadmap are the keys to maintaining a healthy and engaged player base.

As the game’s user reviews on platforms like Steam and Metacritic begin to reflect this sentiment, the long-term health of Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is being called into question. The game’s success relies not only on its core gameplay but on its ability to evolve and keep players engaged for years to come. With a season pass that is nearing its completion and no clear indication of what’s to come, many players are left wondering if this is truly all they get for a game that was marketed as a return to form for the legendary franchise. The current state of affairs is a cautionary tale of how a lack of communication and a mismanaged content strategy can sour the relationship between a developer and its most passionate fans, even for a title as beloved as “Dragon Ball.” The spark, it seems, is beginning to fizzle.
